What is a Competent Person? - Cross Rental Services

Building Regulations

Building Regulations are put in place to make sure building work meets sustainability, convenience, welfare, health & safety standards. Building work must comply with these regulations & be approved by a building control body whether this is an approved independent inspector, local authority or a person authorised to self-certify their work.

How Building Regulations Affect Heating Equipment

It is a legal requirement for all installed heating equipment to comply with building regulations. Poorly installed heating equipment will not be safe & could possibly lead to injury or even a fatality. Therefore, it is essential that heating equipment matches building regulations. If building regulations are not adhered to then you will be faced with a fine & additional costs to make the installation meet regulations.

How to meet Building Regulations

These problems can be resolved through installing heating equipment using an OFTEC registered heating technician. Prior to joining OFTEC, all technicians must complete a training course & are constantly inspected by OFTEC as part of the registration process. An installer becomes known as a “competent person” once they have registered with OFTEC & enables them to self-certify any installation work they carry out. This removes the need for the equipment to be checked by a building control officer, therefore making the installation process smoother through saving time & money.

Work which is certified by a competent person includes a workmanship warranty against building regulation non-compliance. This is an advantage as if a problem is identified & the installer is no longer trading then another person can carry out the remedial work which is needed.
