What is a Condensing Boiler?
A condensing boiler is a highly efficient water heating appliance which can be run on either oil or gas. The boiler burns natural gas to heat the water, in the process producing water vapour and carbon dioxide. However, what separates a condensing boiler from a traditional system is its use of either a larger heat exchanger or two separate heat exchangers which transfer the waste gases back into the heating system. The main aim of a condensing boiler is to generate an increased amount of heat from waste gases which would typically be wasted with a conventional boiler.
What are the advantages?
Efficiency
- The main advantage is the boiler’s efficiency. Through recycling waste gases back into the system, a condensing boiler can have approximately 90% energy efficiency. This is vastly superior to the efficiency of a traditional boiler which is typically between 70-80%.
Environmentally friendly
- Due to its larger heat exchanger recycling the waste gases back into its system, a condensing boiler is far more environmentally friendly than a non-condensing boiler. Condensing boilers have a lower carbon footprint. For example, each year the use of a condensing boiler could save approximately 1.7 tons of CO2 which would normally escape into the atmosphere using a non-condensing boiler.
Size
- A condensing boiler has no need for a hot water tank, thus it can be built into a sleek and compact build. This is an advantage over a conventional boiler due to its smaller build making it able to overcome some of the size limitations in fitting non-condensing boilers.
Safety
- Condensing boilers are fully sealed & take air into the system from outside of a room using a flue. This is more effective than a non-condensing boiler which will most likely take air from inside of the room. The fully sealed design helps ensure safety in comparison to a traditional boiler due to the risk of anything being sucked into the boiler’s interior being completely minimised.
